Gokanosho Heike no Sato is a cultural site steeped in the rich history of the Heike clan, located in the picturesque mountains of Kumamoto, Japan. This themed facility celebrates the legacy of the Heike family with a museum showcasing relics and a stage for Noh plays and other performances related to the clan's storied past. Visitors can immerse themselves in the saga of the Taira clan's life, their conflicts, and their eventual flight to Gokanosho after the Battle of Dan-no-ura. The village also offers a breathtaking view of autumn foliage, making it a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical exploration.
This museum preserves the mountain village life of the Heike refugees. The grounds, which stretch along the Kureko River, include a facility for raising rhododendron seedlings, a facility for raising Kureko chickens, which are registered as a prefectural natural monument, and a resource room for mountain life and performing arts, and introduce the history of the Kureko region. There is also a theater for the "Kureko Ancient Dance," which is said to have been performed by the Heike refugees in remembrance of the capital. The restaurant serves the "Kureko Gozen" (reservations required), which uses Heike radishes and seasonal wild vegetables, as well as wild vegetable and yamame trout dishes.
The height of the waterfall is 38m. It is said that a flying plum tree planted in memory of Sugawara Michizane fell into the waterfall during transportation and got its name. You can reach the waterfall basin by crossing the suspension bridge in Uminoki Todoroki Park. Below the waterfall are Denglong Waterfall and Meizhi Waterfall.
Kokonoe Yume Otsuribashi, also known as the Kokonoe "Dream" Grand Suspension Bridge, is a marvel of engineering and natural beauty. Opened in 2006, it holds the title of the highest pedestrian-only suspension bridge in Japan, offering breathtaking views from 173 meters above the Naruko River gorge. Spanning 390 meters, it allows visitors to experience a thrilling walk amidst the scenic beauty of the Kyushu mountains, making it a popular destination for both thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts.
The Hisatsu Orange Railway is a scenic train line that stretches 117 kilometers between Yatsushiro in Kumamoto and Sendai in Kagoshima, Japan. It is known for its picturesque route along the coast of the Yatsushiro Sea and offers a unique travel experience with themed trains like the "Orange Restaurant," a gourmet dining train. The railway, which started operations in 2004, provides a delightful journey through a region famous for its citrus fruits, with the option to rent bicycles at certain stations to explore the area further.
