Kumamoto is a city in Japan that offers many attractions for shore excursions. You can visit the Kumamoto Castle, one of the most impressive castles in Japan, or the Suizenji Garden, a beautiful landscape garden with a miniature Mount Fuji, beautiful Okoshiki coast, Nagabeta Seabed Road, Nabegataki Falls, Sakuranobaba Josaien castle town, and Kumamoto Castle.
Our Japan shore excursions are designed by Western destination experts who live in Japan along with local Japanese tour specialists to showcase all the best attractions in Japan and provide a unique understanding of Japan from a Western perspective. In particular, we know where to find cherry blossoms and autumn leaves in Kochi that most cruise lines do not emphasize in their shore excursion programs.
Due to the time restriction, you may only visit tow or three of the following attractions.
One of the world's largest calderas, with a diameter of up to 25 kilometers and a circumference of over 100 kilometers, is located in the center of Kyushu. It is formed by Mount Aso, an active volcano that erupted in 2021 and 2016. Mount Aso has several active volcanic peaks, including Mount Nakadake, which has a crater that tourists can visit.
Nagabeta Seabed Road is an undersea road that only opens at certain times of day. When low tide comes, the road is visible, but when high tide comes, only the utility poles and electric wires are visible above the surface. One of Kumamoto's most photographed spots, this mysterious undersea road was built in 1974 for fishermen who cultivate seaweed and shellfish in the Ariake Sea. According to legend, the utility poles that emerge from the water inspired the train line in Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away.
The castle was originally built in 1607 and gives many historical clues on how feudal lords lived during the Edo Period, including examples of architecture of those days. With about 800 cherry trees, the castle becomes a popular cherry blossoms spot usually in late March and early April.
Kumamoto Castle's Sakuranobaba Josaien recreates a Edo Period castle town's atmosphere. There are two parts: Wakuwakuza Museum and Sakura No Koji Shopping Area. At the museum, visitors can watch a samurai show or try on a kimono to learn about Kumamoto's heritage. The shopping area features Kumamoto products and delicacies. You can learn about Kumamoto's culture and history at Sakuranobaba Josaien.

We highly recommend that you book our shore excursions now if you will be taking a cruise in 2024. 2023 has already seen large crowds, and 2024 will see even more. We expect many tourists will be unable to book their shore excursions in 2024, so please make your plan as soon as possible.
