Nikko is a small city in Japan’s Tochigi Prefecture, in the mountains north of Tokyo. With its beautiful surroundings and sacred mountains, Nikko has been a place of worship for Shinto and Buddhists since at least the 8th century. It is home to some of the most magnificent shrines and temples in Japan, most of which are also listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The surrounding national parks are destinations for hikers of all kinds.
The average annual temperature in Nikko is slightly lower than in Tokyo, so if you miss the cherry blossom viewing period in Tokyo, you can make up for it here. In autumn, Nikko is most famous for its fall foliage.
The tour will start from your hotel in Tokyo or Yokohama, or from the cursie terminal in Tokyo or Yokohama. Today we will visit this historic and scenic town north of Tokyo.
Today, if time permits, we will visit in addition to historical buildings such as the World Heritage Toshogu Shrine, Kegon Falls, one of the three waterfalls in Japan, Lake Chuzenji, and the red bridge with mythical stories. You can enjoy both history and nature.
Nikko Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park is one of the most famous cherry blossom viewing spots in Nikko. This memorial park was the imperial residence used by three generations of emperors and crown princes from 1899 to 1947. The 106 rooms villa, built in the Meiji period, is the largest wooden structure among the imperial residences. It is tranquil, and the stroll garden is simple but beautiful. Visitors can enjoy beautiful views throughout the four seasons. In spring, the beautiful cherry blossoms reach full bloom! (Best time is late April.) Please stop by this park when you go to Nikko for sightseeing.
Nikko Toshogu Shrine houses the most famous samurai leader, Tokugawa Ieyasu. This Nikko shrine and temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features beautifully decorated carved structures that are Tochigi tourist highlights. At Nikko Toshogu Shrine, you can see the exquisite sculptures and gorgeous color art created by craftsmen in the Edo period. It includes the magnificent five-story pagoda, which is listed as a national treasure and important cultural property, the three monkeys that tell people about life, the sleeping cat and other famous animal sculptures. They are all must-see attractions that cannot be missed when visiting Nikko Toshogu Shrine.
The Shinkyo Bridge (神橋, Shinkyō, "sacred bridge") stands at the entrance to Nikko's shrines and temples, and technically belongs to Futarasan Shrine. The bridge is ranked as one of Japan's three finest bridges together with Iwakuni's Kintaikyo and Saruhashi in Yamanashi Prefecture.
The current Shinkyo was constructed in 1636, but a bridge of some kind had marked the same spot for much longer, although its exact origins are unclear. Until 1973, Shinkyo was off limit to the general public. It underwent extensive renovation works in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and visitors can now walk across the bridge and back for an entrance fee.
Lake Chuzenji (中禅寺湖, Chūzenjiko) is a scenic lake in the mountains above the town of Nikko. It is located at the foot of Mount Nantai, Nikko's sacred volcano, whose eruption blocked the valley below, thereby creating Lake Chuzenji about 20,000 years ago.
Chuzenjiko's shores are mostly undeveloped and forested except at the lake's eastern end where the small hot spring town of Chuzenji Onsen was built. The town is also the site of Kegon Waterfall, the most famous of several waterfalls in Nikko National Park. Another popular waterfall, Ryuzu Waterfall,is located at the northern shores of Lake Chuzenji where Yukawa River discharges into the lake.
The almost 100 meter tall Kegon Waterfall (華厳の滝, Kegon no taki) is the most famous of Nikko's many beautiful waterfalls. In fact, it is even ranked as one of Japan's three most beautiful falls, along with Nachi Waterfall in Wakayama Prefecture and Fukuroda Waterfall in Ibaraki Prefecture.
Kegon Waterfall is the only exit for the waters of Lake Chuzenji. It can be seen from a free observation platform that is easily accessible on foot, as well as from a paid platform at the base of the falls. The paid platform is accessed via a 100 meter deep elevator and offers more impressive views.
Kegon Waterfall is also a popular autumn color spot. The trees around the waterfall are usually most colorful from mid to late October. In the winter the waterfall is impressive as well when it freezes almost completely solid.
